Michael Phelps gets 19th Olympic medal, makes history

Michael Phelps (USA)

The man from the United States of America Micheal Phelps happens to be my favourite at the London Olympics as far as swimming is concerned. Though he has not been in his usual top form as compared to his performances at the Athens and Beijing Olympics where he won 6 and 8 gold medals consecutively.

Yesterday, the all time 15 gold medalist stepped up to an all time 18 medals after he got close to winning the men's 200m butterfly stroke but could only manage a silver medal after South Africa's Chad le Clos beat him to the wall in some micro seconds.

Interestingly, an hour later he won a gold medal at the men's 4x200m freestyle relay thereby stepping him up to an all time Olympic record of 19 medals. A feat that no one has ever attained, the closest happens to be Larisa Latynina with 18 medal in gymnastics. USA won the gold medal at the relay, followed by France with silver and China taking away the bronze medal.

Another feat Michael Phelps could have attained was becoming the first swimmer ever to win a gold medal in the men's 200m butterfly stroke for the third consecutive time.
