#JusticeforUNIPORTaluu4: THINK NIGERIA - An article on Aluu4

I had a couple opinions about the UNIPORT Aluu4 killing last week, one of which is the article you are going to see below titled THINK NIGERIA by Habeeba B. Shuaeeb

THINK NIGERIA

I have listened to and read about the Killing of the Uniport boys
accused of stealing. I have heard how the police is to be blamed how
the community is at fault and even how the boys brought it on
themselves and why.

continue after the cut...

What I have not heard is what happened to those who stood by and
watched, those who saw what was happening and just went on about their
daily businesses, those who took pictures, those with the cameras who
took their time to film the incident and posted it online, but failed
to raise any objection even if it was just once.

We, the passersby, the watchers are all guilty, and in most cases even
more guilty than those who wielded the sticks, as we are more aware of
how wrong it is, what is happening, which is why we did not
participate.

This is how genocides occurs because we as a people simply do not care
as long as it does not affect us directly. This is where we are wrong
as one day it will be someone that we know that is accused (either
wrongly or otherwise) and there will be nobody to help as those that
would have helped, had experienced the same kind of injustice and we
just watched on and did nothing, even if it was just to distract the
perpetrators. Ask the Jews they know more about this, they watched on
and when it was there turn nobody was there.

This kind of injustice happens everyday in Nigeria (not necessarily
leading to death, but at a cost), whether it is the law enforcement
officer illegally detaining someone on the road, or it is a bus driver
bullying another road user, or even a road user needing help, an
accident scene (we just take picture post it and move on, that could
be your brother or sister), or someone being robbed. We all just stay
there and do nothing.

I will end this with a saying: YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE IS BURNING AND
YOU COVERED IT WITH A BLANKET AND HOPE THAT THE SMOKE WILL NOT REACH
YOUR SIDE, WHEN WILL THE FIRE NOT REACH YOUR SIDE.
