Arsenal Seals £50m Deal for Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain

This is very unusual and very untypical of Arsenal FC, particularly Arsene Wenger but it seems like arsenal are now willing to win at least a trophy this season.

The English club took a bold step by finalizing a deal with Real Madrid that would see Gonzalo Higuain move to London.

The club’s billionaire shareholder Alisher Usmanov has also urged manager Arsene Wenger to keep splashing the cash with a move for Wayne Rooney.  Earlier this month Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said the club were now in a financial position to pursue Europe’s more expensive players, and so appease supporters long frustrated by Wenger’s more frugal approach in the transfer market.

Check out Higuain's scary statistics below.....

Six-and-a-half years at the Bernabeu has produced a record of 106 goals in 188 league games, a testament to his lethal nature in front of goal – and digging a little deeper into the statistics proves how important a player ‘Pipita’ could be at the Emirates. Since joining Real Madrid in 2007, only Lionel Messi (29.45) has a better shot conversion rate than his compatriot (28.31) among those players to have scored more than 50 goals.

This ranks Higuaín as a more clinical finisher than the likes of Falcao, Samuel Eto’o, Sergio Aguero, David Villa and Cristiano Ronaldo. Last season it was once more only Messi that could better his shot conversion rate, and while Gonzalo Higuaín was netting once for every three shots he took (33.33%), Arsenal’s top scorer Walcott only managed 22.58% with second-top Santi Cazorla’s 12 goals down at just 16%. For comparison, Ronaldo’s was just 18.78%.

In raw statistical form, Higuaín is more lethal than the likes of Falcao and Cristiano Ronaldo in front of goal, so £22million looks an absolute steal. He can provide a good defensive work-rate, but this is by no means his strength and Jose Mourinho only trusted him to start one of his last four clásicos with Barcelona. Provided the Gunners have the energy in midfield to compensate for this, then Higuaín’s intelligent movement will get him in the positions to find those extra goals Arsenal need and his seemingly imminent arrival promises much for next season.
